About the Owner

 

It was late at night, well past the usual bed time for a Grade 6 student. It was even past the usual bed time for parents.  I was enraptured by the creation of a book I was writing for my class, and did not want to go to bed. 

 

We were raised in a strong family with rules, including rules about bed time. For reasons I'll never know, however, on this particular night my dad stood quietly (and patiently) by the cupboards while I worked away late into the night.  My pencil crayons and markers were scattered over the brightly lit kitchen table in our otherwise dark, quiet farmhouse.  Dad didn't try to do my project for me, he supported me while I wrote... long past my (and his) bed time.

 

Years later, one of my "books" was solicited for potential publication.  That book was pretty special to me, having been illustrated by my sister and dedicated to both my grandmas.  Being 16 at the time and not knowing much better, I submitted my original manuscript to the publisher.  Naturally, it was never published, never returned, and to this day I do not even know if it was received by the publisher.  Live and learn.

 

My mom has occasionally talked about that missing book, sad that a special family project is gone forever, but also with unspoken curiosity about the "what ifs".  Having lived and learned for a few decades (with much more living and learning to do yet), I hope to share some of my stories and the Owenjs Book Company was founded for just that purpose.  The company is named after my dad, Owen, and my mom, whose initials are NJS (Owenjs is pronounced like "oranges", but with a W).

 

Everyday I am thankful for my parents.  They loved us enough to set rules, say yes and no, and let us be free, creative children.  Inspired by my parents, I hope to share words, concepts and ideas through Owenjs Book Company that will help kids be strong, thoughtful and creative little humans.
